TYPO3 4.4 now available

The TYPO3 community released the newest version of the Open Source CMS TYPO3. TYPO3 has been downloaded over 4.6 million times – making it one of the world’s leading Enterprise Open Source projects.

The latest TYPO3 version 4.4 makes it easier to install and to use than ever before – especially for newbies. A new TYPO3 installation is now up and running in 5 minutes after download and by using the new introduction package, it is ready to use right away without the need of any additional installation of templates.

Introduction Package, to start immediately

The new introduction package offers TYPO3 newbies a configurable template immediately after installation. By using simple examples, it demonstrates the TYPO3 concepts and its possibilities.

At the same time, this template can of course be used as a starting-point for the first own website, since also the color of the template can be set without being a TYPO3 expert already.

Updated user interface (UI) of the TYPO3 Backend

The TYPO3 backend now has a new visual appearance with improved look & feel. In addition to the optimized user experience, the entire CSS of the TYPO3 backend has been revised which also improves the overall performance (page loading). Custom backend skins can now be created much easier thanks to this refactoring.

Easier 3-Step Installation

Installing TYPO3 using the new installer is a lot easier than before. In three easy steps, TYPO3 is up and running and even users can now select their database system (MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL) during the installation process.

Improved default settings keep the newbie user away from complicated screens and decicions-making and therefore simplifies the TYPO3 installation even more. Nevertheless, the complete set of system settings is still available at the installer tool for advanced users.

Faster Rich Text Editor (RTE)

The built-in editor „HTMLarea“ is now completely based on ExtJS, the JavaScript framework that TYPO3 includes since version 4.3.

It is now the first and only feature-complete Open Source Rich Text Editor (RTE) that is based entirely on ExtJS, freely available for the public and now included out-of-the-box in TYPO3 version 4.4.

An editor using TYPO3 can benefit from the improved performance (loading speed) of the text editor without having to give up on any of its rich features.

New Task Center

The new Task Center allows for the creation and management of tasks for all TYPO3 backend users.

Additionally editors can send notes to each other and instantly find the documents they edited recently. With its completely revised interface the new Task Center fits seamlessly into the new look & feel of TYPO3 version 4.4.

As the content production of the Japanese TYPO3 book is progressing, I started to plan for the printing. Paper... I need to organize decent book paper also suitable for the on-demand print machine. Which color... more beige or rather snow white? How thick should it be... and how much will it cost? Different papers for cover and the inside of the book... and more questions came up.

"Touching it is best"... therefore I was looking for a paper shop and visited today the TAKEO shop near Jimbocho in Tokyo. Actually I was impressed by their paper selection, shop presentation (3'000 paper variations, 350 "touchable" in the shop) and helpful staff. After explaining our book project, they suggested various options and informed about cost effective possibilities. Just great.

Calculations of the paper cut, paper fibre directions for proper folding and so forth... I learned a lot I must say, and enjoyed the change to be in the "analog world" of print production. Can highly recommend to visit that show room!

And in the 2nd floor they organize frequently exhibitions. Next is The Takeo Poster Collection from 10 March till 9 April: Graphic Design in the Electronic Age - from Swiss Typography to New Wave.

TYPO3テーマデザイン講座概要

この講座はテンプレートを作成するための最も簡単かつ最も入門的な導入に位置付けられます。これまでにHTMLによるページを制作した経験があれば、講座 を受講する事で、TYPO3を用いたCMS プラットフォームによるダイナミックなウェブサイトの構築が可能となります。

また、この講座ではTypoScriptも扱います。TypoScriptは、TYPO3に特化された言語であり、 HTML／CSSで制作されたウェブデザインをTYPO3テーマとして使用することが出来るようにするものです。

その他、Adobe DreamweaverやIBMホームページ・ビルダー等のホームページ制作ソフトで制作したデザインを、 TYPO3オープンソースCMSで使用する方法についても紹介します。

TYPO3 Theme Designer Seminar - 22 January 2010

About the seminar

If you have created so far static HTML websites, this course will enable you to build a basic theme for TYPO3 CMS. It is an introduction into a simple but fast way of templating.

But still you will use TYPO3 as a powerful CMS platform to publish dynamic websites. Also you will get an introduction of TypoScript, the TYPO3 own script for configuration and after the course you are able to transfer an HTML/CSS based webdesign into a TYPO3 theme.

It also demonstrates an approach of how to get your design from popular editors (e.g. Adobe Dreamweaver or IBM Homepage Builder) into TYPO3 open source CMS.

TYPO3 UsersGroup Japan Workshop & Christmas Party

Last TUGJ workshop in 2009

Yesterday evening we hold the last TYPO3 workshop in 2009 together with participants of the TYPO3 UsersGroup Japan (TUGJ). The topic of the evening was: Templating with TYPO3.

André Oechslin was making a round-trip of various template creation methods possible with TYPO3. We started with the template auto-parser method (or modern template building) using the EXT:automaketemplate. He showed us a fast way to integrate an HTML/CSS static page into a TYPO3 template.

Next was TemplaVoila with the EXT:templavoila (also called futuristic template building). André made a demonstration of how to visually connect the tags in HTML using the TemplaVoila extension.

And last but not least he showed us his passion for TypoScript. He built a template without using any "helpers" only with TYPO3's own configuration script called TypoScript.

Also we introduced to the TUGJ members the certificate of the TYPO3 Association to become a "Certified TYPO3 Integrator". All together tried to answer the example questions on the website, but even with the assistance for the English-to-Japanese translation, there seems to be more time needed for learning TypoScript...

The discussions went on during the x-mas party at snowflake's office.
