84Mbps Download, 57Mbps Upload

The internet infrastructure in Japan one of the best in the world. With fibre cable connection available since many years. Of course we also use an FTTH connection for our Japanese office. This service is called FLET's Hikari Fibre, or in Japanese フレッツ光接続. As our ISP we use Plala.or.jp, one of NTT's many internet service providers. The service offers a max. up- and download speed of 100Mbps and costs ¥3'465 per month (~€25 or ~US$ 39).

Now the declaration of the ISP for the speed is one thing, but how is the actual speed we can get with this setup? I just made a test using speedtest.net and the result was: 84Mbps download and 57Mbps upload speed. Nice...!

But what brings us a good internet connection, when the servers or network cannot deliver data quickly? Of course a download of a large file from a server located in Japan should be very quick. But how about connections overseas, like to USA... So I tested the download speed with 2 large files.

The first download I made was the disk image of Kubuntu 9.10, as server I choose Tokyo University. The speed was amazingly fast... hitting a record 6.0 MB/s, the 683MB disk image was on my desktop in less than 2 minutes.

The other file was from Apple, the iWork 09 Trial. The disk image was sent from a server in the US. So the speed was much less, but still reaching 0.5 MB/s.
