Taifun season starts

Strong winds in Makuhari this morning

It was an amazing long and hot summer this year. As it was only my second summer in Japan, I cannot compare much to previous ones. But friends and also the media reported about the longest hot summer since weather reporting began in Japan.

I've been told, that usually after the O-bon festival around mid August it should get colder. But this year, we have even in September temperatures well over 35℃. Amazing!

Another sign of summer ending is when taifuns are starting to hit Japan. Some of them already appeared in southern parts of Japan this year, like the islands of Okinawa or Kyushu. But the biggest island of Honshu might see a taifun later this week.

But the strong winds this morning on my way to office had also a good effect on the panorama, as due to the hot weather we hardly could see Fuji-san this summer, the wind cleared the sky now. So this morning I had a good view over the Tokyo Bay towards Yokohama and just behind the majestic shape of Fuji-san.

Let's enjoy the remaining days (or still weeks?) of this amazing 2010 summer.

Lunch concert

Cello, Contrabass & Piano

A classical concert at lunch break held today in the World Business Garden Atrium in Makuhari. From Rossini over Bethoven to Bottesini's Tarantella... orchestra members of the Tokyo Philharmonic made a good potpourri for Cello, Contrabass and Piano.

Moreover, there is usually an automatic playing piano on that stage in the atrium. So a live concert for lunch was a great change.

TYPO3 Theme Designer Seminar

TYPO3 CMS for Web Designers

Last Friday evening, snowflake organized together with the Josai International University the first TYPO3 Theme Designer seminar. It was held in a seminar room at JIU's Media Campus in Makuhari.

In this seminar, we were giving a brief introduction, how templates work in TYPO3 and also how to add a new function.

Each seminar participant had its own computer with a pre-installed version of TYPO3 ready to use. And we started off by giving an overview of TYPO3 first.

Actually, students from the internship program were giving the first part of the presentation: what is the TYPO3 backend, login into the administration panel, guiding through the page tree, making new content elements, first element with text-only... then adding pictures, making a new webpage, and so forth.

After that, André Oechslin was guiding through the workflow for making new TYPO3 themes. We prepared a very basic, but easy setup using the approach of "modern template building" with the TYPO3 extension automaketemplate.

Having installed the theme, next André explained the task for the exercise: the rootline on the html template was still static, now how to fill it with dynamic content from the navigation (page tree)? Step-by-step, all participants followed his instructions and achieved this goal.

Finally, we prepared a short test with 10 questions. They were free to join and it was already close to 9pm, still everybody was filling out the test sheet and close to all participants were rewarded with a certificate at the end of this seminar.

It was an interesting evening: for participants to get a inside view into template-making with TYPO3 and for snowflake on teaching Web Designers in Japan about CMS technology.
